The Manchester Metropolitan University Business School (MMUBS) is a 'full-range' business school, offering undergraduate, postgraduate and higher research degrees in all major sub-disciplines of business and management, engaging in applied research and providing in-house courses and consultancy services for corporate clients. It is recognised as a 'Centre of Excellence' for Retail Education by the DTI and offered the first undergraduate retail degree in Europe, started in 1984.

MMUBS is one of the leading partners of the Retail Enterprise Network. The Business School’s fascination with the small retail sector began a few years ago with the project termed ‘Towards a Healthy High Street’. Academics at the University came to the conclusion the small retail sector required support on a number of different levels if the UK’s high streets were to remain healthy. MMUBS went on to create REN and become an integral part in all of the network’s activity.

MyKnowledgeMap (MKM) is a rapidly expanding provider of e-learning and personnel management applications based in York. Formed in 2000 the company now provides a range of advanced internet learning solutions including Course design & development, skill assessment, gap analysis, competency management systems, personal records and associated appraisal system, bespoke learning management systems and the mapping of knowledge required for optimum performance by job role.

As a leading partner of REN the efforts of MKM have significantly contributed to the success to-date of the initiative. The company’s biggest influence can be felt in the Retail Academy – the sub-project aiming to cure the issue of a lack of skills acquisition in the small retail sector. MKM is central to the development of the Retail Academy and has also had a strong hand in the development of local retail and business clubs as well as the design and maintenance of associated website.
